Recently bought Ghost in the Shell: Special Edition and finally managed to see Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.
The movie awoke many thoughts and feelings in me. One of them was the yearn for and simultaneous fear of cybernetic enhancement.
We read all the sci-fi novels and watch the movies and series, and think, "Wow, I'd love to be able to jack straight into the Net, have macroscopic and zoom vision capabilities, have enhanced limbs and speed."
Designer bodies. Choose your eye colour. Hair colour. Upgrade your memory. Do away with unnecessary biological processes. Keep your MP3 collection in your head. Instant and perfect recall.
But at the same time, at what point do we lose our humanity and become more machinelike. Where do you draw the line between "human" and "human likeness".
Do I want something whispering in my 'ghost', fighting constant attacks against virii and intrusion attempts trying to break into my mind, rendering me useless, a prisoner within my own mind, a ghastly yet perfect automaton, dancing on someone else's puppet strings.

Good points. But we as normal organic humans are far from perfect. So we move towards the point the Borg is all about. Where does perfect stand? 100% cybernetic? 50/50 human/cybernetic? And if we loose our humanity at some point, does a 50/50 split actually constitute 100% cybernetic? Afterall, the cybernetic implants and enhancements in the true sense are useless without the organic parts. Unless you move into the true realm of robotics. But it's removed. And it's infinitely less powerfull than the organic prowess of our brains.
Anyway, the point is : Is it cybernetics that takes away from humanity, or humanity that gives cybernetics it's meaning?
I love GitS... I had the VHS and was so so happy when I got the DVD. I'd love to get the english versions of the second movie and the Standalone Complex series. And I adore Masamune Shirow's work.
I tried to get Bryce to imitate some of the lighting from the second movie here...

Until such time as we can recreate the brain synapses in circuits, we still need the brain. But the rest... even now, is slowly being interfaced. An amazing and scary thought.
There is a Ph.D prof somewhere in the states, I think, that is using himself as a guinea pig for man/machine interface projects. I must try find the book sometime for you.

When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example.
